収録内容
フランス国立図書館のl’Enfer（地獄）コレクションより約2,400点の書物を収録します。そのうち約450点は、Flagellation（鞭打ち文学）と呼ばれる特別コレクションです。さらに、異なる（しかし関連した）コレクションである、1923年以前のFlagellation Sous-Chaineの資料約500点も電子化して収録します。収録書籍は主にフランス語で書かれ、英語、ドイツ語、スペイン語他も含まれます。
l’Enferコレクションと、Archives of Sexuality and Gender: Sex and Sexuality, Sixteenth to Twentieth Centuryが提供する大英図書館のプライベート・ケース(非公開蔵書保存室)・コレクションを横断検索、比較することは、性の歴史への理解を深め、セクシュアリティに関する視点を発展させる上で、研究者に計り知れない価値をもたらします。また、Nineteenth Century Collections Onlineとあわせて利用することで、セクシュアリティへの視点や規制の変化をより深く理解することができます。
収録コレクション
フランス国立図書館が所蔵する猥褻、好色な性格を持つ書籍や手稿の特別コレクションで、その稀少性と価値によりかつては許可を受けた人のみが閲覧可能でした。猥褻の理由で隔離収集された世界各地の発禁本コレクションの中でも、大英図書館の「プライベート・ケース」と並んで最も有名なコレクションで、1836年から1844年にかけて設立されました。2013年現在、16世紀から現在に至るまで約2,600巻を収録しています。なお、「Enfer」は「地獄」の意味ですが、「閉じ込める」の意味の「Enfermer」と発音が似ているため、使われるようになったというのが有力な説です。
Flagellation という言葉は、書籍販売人の間で使われはじめ、後に図書館員の間に広まった名称です。1880年代から1930年代にかけて、好色文学のサブジャンルとしてフランスで広まりました。鞭打たれることに性的な快楽を覚える性的倒錯を示す”passionate flogging”に関する文学作品で構成されます。
