本書は、全３巻を通して、日本が封建社会から世界的な経済大国へと成長し、バブル経済や長期停滞、構造的課題に直面していく過程を壮大な物語として描きます。
アケミク・キュチュク・アリ（福岡大学 商学部教授）の単著である本書は、明晰な経済分析を通して、日本の軌跡をつくった政策・制度、産業、社会的諸力を説明します。第１巻では産業化と近代化の過程を中心に、江戸以前から1945年までの日本を描きます。第２巻では、1945年から1971年までを対象に、戦後復興と高度成長について分析します。第３巻では、バブルや不況を経験した1971年から現在までの日本を検証します。官僚制度、産業発展を目的にした政策、教育・労働制度、金融システムなど、幅広い政策・制度の分析を通して、稀有で包括的な視点で、現代の日本が抱える課題を示します。
