『大日本』の著者として知られるヘンリー・ダイアー Henry Dyer（1848ー1918）は、東京大学工学部の前身校、工部大学校の初代校長(正式には都検)として明治6年（1873年）に来日した「お雇い外国人」です。
24歳の若さで初代工部卿伊藤博文に任命された彼は、その後10年間工部学校長の職を務め、ともに来日した電気工学のAyrton、化学のDiversなど８人のイギリス人教師らと協力し日本の工学研究の礎を築きました。実学を重んじた彼の功績は今日でも高く称えられており、1998年には出身大学であるグラスゴー・ストラスクライド大学の設立200周年と、工部大学校の設立120周年を記念してストラスクライド大学と東京大学の両方で同時にダイアー記念シンポジウムが開催され、英国大使より東京大学にダイアーの胸像が贈呈されています。
本書はダイアーの著作を、滞日時代に発表した工学教育に関するパンフレット類から、スコットランド帰国後発表し日本でも直ちに翻訳された ‘The Evolution of Industry’（邦訳「工業進化論」1896）、明治初期の日本を記述した大著 ‘Dai Nippon’、近代化とともに先進国の仲間入りをはたそうとする日本を国際政治の視点から論じた ‘Japan in World Politics’、そして晩年に発表した教育論まで幅広く集成します。
「ダイアーの日本」(福村出版, 1989) の著者である編者の序文および書誌も収録されます。日本研究、日英交流史そして教育史の史資料として大変貴重な文献集です。
