概要
数理地球科学とは、数理的なアプローチで地球における諸現象―天候や地震、洪水など―の理論モデルを考案し、シミュレーションを実施し、結果の解析を行う学問です。例えば天気予報では統計的な手法の改善を通して、より正確な予想ができるようになります。また、地震測定学の分野では、各所に遍在する地震計の莫大なデータから本質的な部分を抽出するアルゴリズムを開発することで、新たな地震のメカニズムを発見し、防災や減災に活かすことができます。
