概要
障害は多くの人々にとって他人事と見られがちですが、WHOの調査によると世界中で13億人もの人々が何らかの障害を抱えて生きていると推定され、実は誰もが身近に経験し得る根源的な人間の条件といえます。
本書「障害百科事典」は、障害を医療・福祉を越えて社会・文化・歴史・環境と深く結びつくテーマとして捉え直す、21世紀の障害学の潮流を集大成するべく編纂されました。世界58ヶ国から400人以上の寄稿者を得て、全4巻にて、最新の学際的かつ国際的な研究動向を示す502項目をアルファベット順に収録します。「気候変動と障害」「糖尿病と障害」「臨床倫理」「障害と文学・文化表象」「宗教と障害」「障害の歴史」「戦争・紛争と障害」といった多様な事項に対応し、近年重要な「パンデミック」「人工知能」「アクセシビリティ」の課題も掘り下げています。また、従来の健常者が障害者を研究対象とする上下関係を乗り越えて当事者自身が共同研究者となる参加型アプローチ、多様な人種・階級・性別・性的指向・年齢による障害の経験に寄り添う「インターセクショナリティ（交差性）」のアプローチも本書の大きな特色です。日本の研究者も多く寄稿し、セクション編者の一人で障害学の視座から公共空間のアクセシビリティを分析するBeata Borowska-Beszta（ポーランド・ニコラスコペルニクス大学教授）は、大阪公立大学の客員教授も務めています。
