英国科学振興協会が地方の主要都市で開催した年大会用に作成したハンドブックから、北部8都市を対象とした第1期、中部・南部8都市を対象とした第2期、あわせてイングランド主要地方16都市を網羅するコレクションです。多数の折込地図なども含め完全復刻。

各都市の歴史、自然地理、産業、港湾や工場、学校、図書館といった施設の紹介など、通常の旅行ガイドには無い詳細な情報を載せた「郷土誌」の集成。
イギリス19世紀文学の中にも頻繁に使われる舞台となった都市の同時代のガイドや地図は、文学・文化研究の資料としても有用。
